LANDON, Major James Henry 8 October 1832-1915
"Bibliotheca Northantoniensis" by John Taylor, privately printed, identifies Major L..... as Major Landon. NoRO reports an entry for Major Henry Landon, Creaton Lodge, Great Creaton, in the "1890 directory". An obituary for Major Landon, who died in 1915, is at NoCe; oddly, the obituary does not refer to him as the author of two popular cookery books. OB holds "Account of the family of Landon of Monnington and Credenhill, Co. Hereford. Compiled from notes and information collected by some members of the family.", privately printed, 1912. An entry on page 17 of the account reads, "James Henry Landon, born 8 October 1832 at the Deanery, Exeter; Major; late of the 24th Regiment of Foot 1854 to 1859; Adjutant of the Northants Regiment of Volunteers 1860 to 1886; Inspector in Board of Agriculture from 1886 to 1901; living at Creaton House, Northampton, 1910." Again, no mention is made of his cookery writing. @The entry in BMCat which identifies Major L..... as "(L. F. J. de) Viscount" is certainly wrong. @"The Pytchley book of refined cookery and bills of fare" is dedicated to the Countess Spencer. My enquiries to the Spencer family revealed nothing about the book or its author since the family had no memory of either and was unable to look through its library and archives. A personal search of the family's library by an interested bibliophile might be more productive.

Printed on the title-page is "Variety's the very spice of life, which gives it all its flavour. Cowper.' This quotation appears on the title-pages of all the editions that I have examined, that is the third, fourth and fifth editions.
