LEWIS, Mrs Amelia

Mrs Lewis edited the periodical "Food and health leaves' of which LB has New Series, Nos. 1-30, Manchester: 1879. On the front page of each issue at LB Mrs Lewis is described as an "inventor of a new method of heating and cooking, as exemplified by new appliances'. In the June 1879 issue there is an advertisement for the Chamber Stove, "the first and smaller size of the series of three reformer stoves invented by Mrs Amelia Lewis'. In the lecture on pages 1-21 Mrs Lewis argues for moderation in the consumption of meat and alcohol. One of her aims is to encourage the working classes to get the best food value by steaming rather than boiling their vegetables; in this respect she was a woman well ahead of her time! Recipes are on pages 22-31. LB, LoEN and OB date the third edition [1878].
