In the preface Mrs Smith implies that she was about thirty-two years old at the time of writing when she refers to herself as a child of twelve and adds, "since then, for twenty years...." Anecdotes from her daily life are woven into the text. Many of the recipes are written as instructions to her maid, Isobel.
