STODDART, Miss L. W.   


EpicureDir 1899 lists Miss L. W. Stoddart on page 99 as a teacher of cookery with a First-Class Diploma from the National Training School. Her post is given as Superintendent of Cookery Classes, Kent County Council; her address, 105 Gloucester Road, London NW. @Miss Stoddart won an essay prize in the "Cookery annual" of 1905 under the pseudonym Invicta.

      The text includes demonstration lessons and recipes. The publisher, Simpkin, is printed on the spine. The LCF copy catalogued here is inscribed by the author on the front end-paper "With compliments L. W. Stoddart."
      LCF holds a second copy rebound with the second edition of "Plain cookery recipes". This second copy, however, has some recipes cut out and lacks pages 189 onwards.
      The LB volume has a leaf of advertisements preceding the title-page on page 1. It is bound in thin brown boards. The price of 1s 6d is printed on the binding.

      The preface states, "This book contains the recipes of dishes given in the two courses set forth in the "Cookery teachers' manual"...." LB and OB date the book [1893]; LoEN dates it [1894].

      In addition to the volume catalogued here, LCF has an incomplete copy of the second edition: it was bound without the first two leaves of advertisements and without the last two leaves made up of three pages of index and one of an advertisement; pages 1-8 of the recipes have been torn out.
      LCF also holds another copy of the second edition of "Plain cookery recipes" which has been rebound with "Cookery teachers' manual".
