STRAUSS, Dr Gustave Louis Maurice   about 1807-2 September 1887


On page 4 of the first of two volumes of "Reminiscences of an old bohemian", London: Tinsley Brothers, 1882, Strauss says he was born at Trois-Rivie1res in Lower Canada, now Quebec, "a British subject, though of foreign, slightly composite, extraction, with a strange mixture of Italian, French, German, and Sarmatian blood in [his] veins". DNB includes an entry for Strauss which gives his birth and death dates, and place of death, Teddington, England.

      The author is not identified by name in the first edition. The text is in five parts: "The food of man", "The cook and the kitchen, larder, pantry, and cellar, provisions, etc", "Meat and the processes of cooking it", "Poultry and game-fish and shellfish # molluscs and turtle" and "Vegetables". An appendix follows with four subject divisions: "Condiments", "Salads", "Unfermented beverages # coffee # tea # chocolate" and "Fermented drinks".

      In this edition the author is identified in the cover-title, "Dr Strauss's cookery book", and in a publisher's advertisement on page 3 as G. L. M. Strauss. The preface to the new edition is dated December 1886. Pages 233-285 are headed "Additions and emendations".
