      The preface, which is dated Reading, May 1888, states that the book is a revised and extended version of an article which appeared in "Amateur's guide in horticulture" several years previously. The text is organised alphabetically by vegetable, from artichokes, globe, to vegetable marrows. Included are some unusual vegetables for the time, such as corn cobs and cardoons.
