      The author is not identified by name in this edition. In the preface, which is signed simply "the authoress", Mrs Addison says that she has lived abroad the greater part of her life but is now settled in England. She cites the dishes of Madeira, the Continent and southern Africa as among those she has sampled and begs her reader "to escape from the trammels of the ordinary British fare, and give the following recipes an unprejudiced and honest trial". The book includes many Portuguese and Spanish recipes, as well as instructions for making "Mexican frijoles", "West Indian pepper-pot" and "African "babotie"".

      In the note to the second edition on page viii, which is signed "Kate Addison", the author says, "... in only a few circumstances have I been able conscientiously to add to my previous collection". She also defends her frequent use of garlic.
      The copy in LCF is initialled by hand on the title-page by Charles Herman Senn.

      In the preface, which is signed "Kate Addison. Broxbourne, Herts.", the author states that "this fourth and enlarged edition... contains over three hundred more recipes than the first".

      M. Clare E. Addison, the author's daughter, states in the preface that she has added fifty new recipes. This edition has 662 numbered recipes and is part of "The woman's economical series". Both LB and OB date the book [1912].
      The OB copy has the original dust-jacket glued to the front end-paper.
