      The cover-title is "The nautical and cottage cookery book". In the LCF copy the imprint cited above is on a label mounted over the original imprint, "London: printed by Eyre and Spottiswoode and published by Thos. Francis Adkins, 1903". The OB copy has no label over the original imprint.
      The author signs the preface "T. F. Adkins. Sailors' Home, Dock Street, London, E. 1903." and states, "The object of this book is not at all to provide information for the better class of ships, mail boats, etc, but for sailing ships, ocean tramps, and small craft, where the stores are entirely under the captain's supervision, and where there is little facility for keeping provisions".
      The recipes are arranged alphabetically in the main section called "General cookery recipes".

      This is a retitled edition of "Alphabetical guide to sailors' cookery". Inserted between pages 4-5 is a leaf with a letter from "Graham" to the author, dated 24 December 1907, printed on the recto. The letter seems to have been written for the publication of the third edition. The six plates are grouped together and follow the first page of advertisements at the back of the book.
      The LCF copy is signed on the page opposite the title-page, in black ink, "Mr. Herman Senn. With the authors [--sic--] compliments 9-1-08".

      The title-page is on page i following one leaf of end-paper advertisements. The full-page illustrations show serviette-folding, cleaning and trussing fowls, joints of meat and a diagram of a bullock.
      This edition includes the undated preface to the sixth edition. Unlike the second edition of 1903, the general recipe section is now organised by subject, such as soups, fish and meat dishes.

      Atkinson, the reviser of Thomas Francis Adkins' original work, says in his preface to the eleventh edition that this book "is accepted as a standard one by the Shipping Federation, and is used in all their nautical schools of cookery". This work, however, seems also to have been used in the home, since a letter on page x signed by Gladys Owen, the Cookery Editress of "Home chat", suggests that "the average housewife will find it invaluable".% 0011
