ART OF FEEDING THE INVALID

  • The art of feeding the invalid
  • Subjects: invalid cookery,

    • 1. The art of feeding | the invalid | a series of chapters on the nature of certain | prevalent diseases and maladies; together | with carefully selected recipes for the | preparation of food for invalids | by | a medical practitioner | and | a lady professor of cookery
London: The Scientific Press Ltd; nd
      20.5 x 13.5 cm   Pp [1-14] ads, [i-v] vi [vii] viii, [1] 2-264, [i-x] ads   Brown cloth
      GB:   LWel   LoEN   OB   *OPo(F)

The recipes are arranged alphabetically. Unusually, each item in the lists of ingredients is numbered.
The publisher's address on the title-page is "140 Strand, W.C." In the OPo(F) copy, "140" has been corrected with a purple-inked rubber stamp to read "428"; however, neither the LWel, LoEN nor OB copies has this correction. The LWel copy has only four leaves of advertisements preceding the half-title.%
LoEN and OB date this edition [1893]. EngCat 1890-1897 lists this title issued by the same publisher in October 1892 for 3s 6d. The only evidence of the date of publication in the book is an advertisement on the back end-paper which cites the 14 May 1892 issue of the "Lancet".%
BMCat lists this title dated [1893] but the volume is destroyed. NUCat cites copies dated [1892] at DNLM, PU and PPULC which I have been unable to examine to determine if they are the edition described here.

    • 2. — [Title as first edition] | New and popular edition
London: The Scientific Press Ltd; nd
      18.0 x 12.0 cm   Pp 3-4 ads, [i], 6, [iii-v] vi [vii] viii, 1-264, 265-274 ads
GB:   LWel   LoEN   OB   *OPo(F)   WYoLU(B)
      US:   MB

An advertisement on page 272 with the note "Full price lists on application. 1899." gives a clue to the date of publication of this edition. EngCat 1898-1900 lists the popular edition published by The Scientific Press Ltd in March 1900 at the price of 1s 6d.% 0083

    • 3. — [Title as first edition] | New edition | with special chapter on food in tuberculosis and | consumption of the lungs
London: The Scientific Press Ltd; nd
      18.5 x 12.0 cm   Pp [1-2] ads, [i-v] vi [vii] viii, 1-268   Brown cloth
      GB:   *LB

Pages 265-268 are advertisements. This "new edition" is not listed in EngCat and is, therefore, difficult to date precisely; however, there is an advertisement on page 268 with the note "Price lists on application 1899."% 0084

    • 4. — The art of feeding the | invalid & convalescent | the nature of certain | prevalent diseases | and maladies, together | with carefully selected | recipes for the prepar- | ation of suitable food. | By | a medical practitioner | and | a lady professor of cookery. | New edition | thoroughly revised and brought up-to-date | by | Jessie J. Williams, M.C.A.
London: The Scientific Press Ltd; [1923]
      18.0 x 12.0 cm   Pp [i-viii], 1-213   Brown cloth
      GB:   *LB   LoEN   OB   OPo(F)
      US:   DNLM   PPC   PPULC

Of the first four leaves in the LB copy, page i is blank; pages ii, iv and viii are advertisements; and page iii is the title-page. The date of publication is from the prefatory note on page vii which is signed "J. J. W. July, 1923." The publisher printed on the spine is not The Scientific Press Ltd as on the title-page, but Faber and Faber.
Unlike the LB copy, that at OPo(F) does not have a leaf of advertisements preceding the title-page, and the publisher on the spine is the title-page publisher.% 0085
