This author's cookery books were published under the name of Marie de Joncourt. Only in "Letters to young housekeepers' does she identify herself as Mrs W. Phipson Beale. NUCat lists her as Lady Mary Beale nee Thompson.

      In the preface the author describes the book as "an assemblage of answers to questions addressed to me by young housekeepers mainly directed to the combination of economy with wholesome and varied cuisine'. The text begins with fifteen letters on pages 1-43 followed by an appendix on pages 44-119 containing 214 numbered recipes and a section of cottage recipes on pages 120-128.
      Bitting 248 records a copy bound in paper. The LB copy is bound in red cloth.
      Coincidentally, "Letters to young housekeepers" is cited on the same numbered page in both Axford and Bitting.

      Although the book is described as the fifth edition on the title-page, "fourth edition' is printed on the binding and there is a "Preface to fourth edition' dated November 1886. The date of publication of the fourth edition, 1887, is cited on the binding.
