BEETON, Mrs Isabella Mary   14 March 1836-6 February 1865

  • Book of household management
    • 1. Mrs Beeton's "Book of household management", which was issued in instalments from 1859 to 1861 and then in book form in 1861, was repeatedly published in various editions over more than a century. Although it was probably found in more homes than any other cookery book, and the most often consulted, in the years 1875 to 1914, its genesis was in an earlier time and so its full story is not told here. It spawned a number of derivations, all carrying the Beeton name, even those titles issued after Isabella's death in 1865. A brief publishing history follows of the derivations that continued to be issued into the period covered by the bibliography. The editions listed do not represent a complete record of all that were printed, only those which I could identify with confidence from libraries' and booksellers' catalogues and private collectors' descriptions.
"The Englishwoman's cookery book... being a collection of economical receipts taken from her "Book of household management"", sometimes called "Mrs Beeton's shilling cookery book", appeared in several editions into the 1880s: 1863 [1862] (LB destroyed); new edition, 1866 (Priv coll); new edition, [1867'] (LB); 145th thousand, nd (cited in PCat Autumn 1981); 150th thousand, [1870'] (LB); 1872 (cited in CBCat 39); new and improved edition, [1879] (LB destroyed, LoEN); and new and improved edition, [1882] (LB micro OB, LoEN, OB). AbCat December 1977 cites 176th thousand, nd; a private collector reports an undated edition numbered 205th thousand; PorCat "Porcupinia supplement: the feminine world" cites 436th thousand, nd; and AbCat Spring 1977 cites 476th thousand, nd. In 1890 it was reissued under a new title "Mrs Beeton's cookery book and household guide", later shortened to "Mrs Beeton's cookery book". Probably more than the following editions were published: new and enlarged edition, 1890 (LB, LoEN); 1891 and 1894 )both cited in an unidentified bookseller's catalogue); 1896 (cited in LDCat List 14); 1898 (cited in CBCat 21); new and enlarged edition, 1899 (LoEN); new edition, 1901 (LB destroyed, LoEN, OB; OCl); new edition, 1902 (BVA; LB missing); 1904 (cited in CBCat 34); 1906 (Priv coll); new edition, 1908 (cited in AlCat (November 1979')); 1909 (LB, LoEN, OB); new edition, 1910 (NNNAM); new edition, 1911 (cited in PorCat "Porcupinia supplement: the feminine world"); new edition, 1912 (LB); new edition, 1914 (cited in AbCat Spring 1977); new edition, 1915 (LB); new and revised edition, 1923 [1922] (LB destroyed); new and revised edition, [1950] (BVA; LB, LoEN). A private collector reports an undated edition numbered 546th thousand.
"Mrs Beeton's dictionary of every-day cookery", another abridged version of the recipes from the "Book of household management", appeared in 1865 (LB; NN). This was reissued under a new title, "All about cookery", in several editions: thirty-fifth thousand, [1871] (LB); sixty-ninth thousand, nd (cited in PorCat "Porcupinia supplement: the feminine world"); new edition, 1890 (LB); 1897 (NPV); 1900 (cited in an unidentified bookseller's catalogue); 1901 (cited in CBCat 37); 1902 (cited in AbCat July 1976); new edition, 1903 (cited in AbCat Spring 1977); 1906 (cited in CBCat 31); new edition, 1907 (LB, OB); 1909 (BVA; ICJ); 1911 (cited in LDCat List 14); 1913 (cited in MCat); 1915 (cited in BCat Parkinson March 1975); new edition, 1923 (LB, LoEN; DLC, NN); new and revised edition, [1951] (LB, LoEN); 1963 (LB); and 1970 (cited in PWCat List 3).
"Mrs Beeton's dictionary of every-day cookery" was also reissued with additional matter under the title "Beeton's every-day cookery and housekeeping book" in the following editions: [1872] (LB; MiU); [1877'] (LB); new edition, 1890 (LB); new edition, 1891 (Priv coll); 1892 (MCR, MH); 1893 (Priv coll); new edition with the shortened title "Mrs Beeton's every-day cookery", 1907 (LB, LoEN, OB; ICJ); new edition, 1909 (NN, PPULC, PP); 1912 (cited in BCat Maclaren); new edition, 1923 (LB, LoEN; DLC, WaT, CoD); new and revised edition, [1950] (LB, LoEN); new edition, [1963] (LB, LoEN); and facsimile edition, 1984 (cited in CBCat 43).
"Beeton's every-day cookery and housekeeping book" was itself reissued in a slightly altered form as "Mrs Beeton's family cookery and housekeeping book", later abbreviated to "Mrs Beeton's family cookery", in an edition dated 1893 (LB, LoEN; MH, OCl); new edition, 1907 (LB, LoEN, OB); 1912 (LU); new edition, 1923 (LB, LoEN; NN, OClh); new and revised edition, [1951] (LB, LoEN); [1962] (LB, LoEN); and third impression, 1972 (LB).
The undated first edition of 20,000 copies of "Beeton's penny cookery book" was published by Ward, Lock and Tyler and OB dates its copy [about 1870]. There was an undated fifth edition, also published by Ward, Lock and Tyler (DLC, NN). OB has an undated new and improved edition of "Beeton's penny cookery book" published by Ward, Lock and Co which the library dates [1891]. A volume with the title "Cookery: containing useful instructions and economical recipes for the practical housekeeper", published by Ward, Lock and Co and dated 1897, is at LB, LoEN and OB. On the binding is the series name "New penny handbooks" and the cover-title "Cookery". Beeton's name is not cited. A volume with the same title, published by Ward, Lock and Co and undated, is at NN. It also bears the series name "New penny handbooks" but in this edition the cover-title is "Beeton's cookery". At OB is a new edition, also in the "New penny handbooks" series, called "Mrs Beeton's penny cookery book containing useful instructions and about 250 economical recipes of everyday dishes", published by Ward, Lock and Co and dated 1908. There was an edition, 1915 (cited in BCat Parkinson March 1975).
"Mrs Beeton's sixpenny cookery" is dated 1910 (LB destroyed, OB; ICJ). BMCat describes the 256-page "Mrs Beeton's cookery" as a new edition of "Mrs Beeton's sixpenny cookery". There was an edition of "Mrs Beeton's cookery" dated 1923 (LB; NN), and an undated edition (cited in BCat Parkinson March 1975 and other booksellers' catalogues).
