    • 1. The book | of the | banana [Cover-title]
[Manchester and London: printed by H. S. Woodyer and Bro.; nd]
15.0 x 11.0 cm   Pp 1-23   Paper with boy holding banana on front
      GB:   *OB

The book was issued as a promotion for Elders and Fyffes Ltd, banana importers. The front face of the paper binding is numbered page 1. On page 2 there is a map of the routes of the company's banana and passenger steamers. Pages 3-6 discuss the banana and its development. Recipes using bananas are on pages 9-23. The text is printed in brown throughout.
OB has two identical copies. One it dates [1907]; the other, [1908].
See also "Many ways of cooking bananas", another title by Elders and Fyffes. "The book of the banana" appears to have been the first published of the two. I have been unable to compare the texts to explore the possibility that "Many ways" is a retitled edition of the earlier work.
"The book of the banana" and James Henry Cook's "Bananas, and all about them", both of which appeared in 1907, are the earliest books published in Britain on cooking with bananas that I have found. For a short account of the introduction of the banana to Britain's mass market, see Elders and Fyffes Ltd.
