BRILLAT-SAVARIN, Jean Anthelme   1 April 1755-2 February 1826


The first edition of Brillat-Savarin's "Physiologie du gou3t' was published in Paris and dated 1826 (see Vicaire 115). The first English translation to be published in Britain appeared in 1859, with a second edition following in 1864 and a third in 1865. The translator was Leonard Francis Simpson. (Bitting 60 records an earlier English translation by Fayette Robinson published in Philadelphia by Lindsay and Blakiston in 1854.)% 0273

      There is a prefatory note dated 16 August 1876; however, this edition was probably issued in 1879 since the publisher's advertisements are dated August 1879 and EngCat lists a new edition in 1879 at the price of 2s 6d. The series title, "The Mayfair library', is printed on the binding.
      NUCat cites a new edition dated 1876 at PP and PPULC. PP, the library from which the NUCat entry originated, reports that, although its copy has a prefatory note dated 1876, the title-page is undated. The PP copy is almost certainly the same edition as the WYoLU(B) volume catalogued here.% 0275

      The publisher's notice on page 7 states, "The present unabridged translation is, we believe, the first attempt made to offer to English readers this book as it was written.' It was issued in a limited edition. A note on page iv records that 300 copies were printed for England and 200 with an American imprint. The LoEN copy is number 294. NUCat and Bitting 60 list the American edition of this translation as published in New York by J. W. Bouton in 1884.
      LB, LoEN and OB date the book 1884 [1883]. The preface is signed "Charles Monselet. Paris, 30th Nov. 1879.' and includes biographical notes about the author.
