"The G. C.' is commonly identified as the pseudonym for Victor Chevalley de Rivaz; however, I have found different interpretations of the initials, "G. C.'. LoEN suggests "The Grand Cordon'. Chevalley de Rivaz also wrote the cookery book, "Round the table", first published in 1872, and an anonymous review of "Round the table" in the July 1872 edition of "Lancet" says, "The "G. C." (which we take to stand for "Gallic Cock," the {{nom de plume}} of a well-known writer on cuisine in a popular weekly journal)...." A pencilled note in the LWel 1887 edition of "Practical dinners" also proffers "The Gallic Cock". The Bitting 599 entry for "Round the table" puts "Grill Club" in parentheses following the title.

      There are 108 numbered menus each with the recipes following. The preface, which is dated April 1887, says that the recipes originally appeared in "The queen'.
