      BMCat cites "Universal cookery series. No. 1. Pastry-cook and confectioner... A handy guide on what to buy", London: L. Emanuel, 1879, pages 32. This may well be the first edition (see entry for the seventh edition).

      The unsigned preface to the seventh edition refers to the demand for the seventh edition of the book "within three years of its first publication", indicating that the first edition was issued in 1879. The preface also states that "several new and original recipes have been added". The text is arranged under the headings "Jellies and creams", "Pastry", "Cakes and biscuits", "Puddings", "Preserves" and "Savoury and aspic jellies". Although G. P. Swinborne and Co's name does not appear in the title of the seventh edition as it does in the title of later editions, this edition was also published to promote the company's products.
