PENNELL, Mrs Elizabeth Robins   1855-1936


Elizabeth Pennell was a keen collector of cookery books. In "My cookery books", Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Co, 1903, which was issued in a limited edition of 330, she presented a bibliography of her collection accompanied by an introductory essay, illustrations from the books and facsimiles of frontispieces.

      A note on page 269 reveals that the text was originally published in the "Pall Mall gazette" under the heading, "Wares of Autolycus". In the introduction the author describes the contents as not a cook's manual or a housewife's companion which catalogue recipes but "rather a guide to the beauty, the poetry, that exists in the perfect dish."

      Printed on the verso of the title-page is "First published 1896 < Revised edition 1923". In the introduction to this new edition the author discusses cookery books, cookery-book collecting, and her own collection.% American editions: NUCat lists three editions following the first edition of 1896: "The feasts of Autolycus", Akron, Ohio, Chicago [etc]: The Saalfield Publishing Co, 1900; a retitled edition, "The delights of delicate eating", Akron, Ohio, New York [etc]: Saalfield Publishing Co, 1901; and a further retitled edition, "A guide for the greedy", Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Co, [1923].
