Mrs Ballin makes clear in the preface that she believes children should not be denied their sense of taste and pleasures of the palate. She writes, "The old monastic idea that such pleasures are reprehensible should die out as quickly as possible." She says in the preface that the book is "written by one who is a well tried authority on the subject [of good cooking]" but only on page viii of the advertisements at the back of the book is the author identified as Mrs H. Pillow.
LoEN, OB and NN date the book [1900].
The initial pagination of the OB copy differs from the LoEN volume; it runs [i] ii [iii] iv [v-vi] vii-viii,....
