      The book contains 102 numbered vegetarian recipes. Although the author's name does not appear on the binding or at the beginning of the book, he signs the final section, "Explanations and suggestions', pages 32-36. Here he mentions the benefit he has obtained from vegetarian foods "during the past 33 years'. "Simple hints on food', pages 2-3, is signed by C. W. Forward, a well-known member of the food reform movement and author of vegetarian cookery books.
      OB dates its copy, acquired in February 1915, [1915]. LB dates the book [1914]. On page 36 Hall says that the book "has been hurriedly written to meet a pressing emergency', and in the introduction to the sixty-fifth thousand catalogued below he refers to "writing this little book of recipes when the war commenced in August, 1914'. The cost of ingredients is based on "normal prices ruling in June, 1914'. Since it seems likely that the first edition was published before the end of 1914, I have included the book in the bibliography. (There is no entry in Eng
