Printed on the title-page is the quotation ""A perfect woman, nobly planned, to warn, to comfort, and command."'
Clues to Little Mary's identity are found in the preface which states, "This little book is dedicated... to Sir Charles Cameron, C.B., the famous scientist, at whose hospitable board the authoress has enjoyed many excellent dinners.... The authoress can, without having studied in cookery schools, cook nearly every dish mentioned herself; and she regrets that, being copyright, the recipes for which she gained prizes in the "Ladies' field" cannot be given.'
