MILES, Eustace Hamilton   born 1868


Athlete and academic, owner of his own restaurant and cookery school, Eustace Miles was also a prolific writer of books and pamphlets on health issues. Many of these publications contain some guidance on cooking.

The text contains 116 numbered recipes, printed one to the recto of each leaf (advertisements for the author's products, courses and books are printed on the verso).       "Published 1910' is printed on the verso of the title-page. The book is in four parts: I "The case for sensible food reform stated plainly", II "Properties of the non-flesh foods', III "The cooking of the non-flesh foods" and IV "How to begin a non-flesh diet'. There are only eighty-nine numbered recipes, not ninety as stated in the title.

      Although the text includes advice on exercises, cleanliness, recreation and rest, the greater part of the book # pages 13-32 # is on food and cookery. There are thirty-two numbered recipes, not thirty as stated in the title. LB and OB date the book [1909].
