JEX-BLAKE, Sophia Louisa 1840-1912
Sophia Jex-Blake studied medicine at Edinburgh from 1869 to but was not legally allowed to graduate or to practice medicine until She founded the London School of Medicine for Women in 1874, and became one of Britain's first women doctors, practising in Edinburgh from until 1899. A biography of her, by Margaret G. Todd, was published in 1918.
