      In the introduction, which is signed "Violet M. Falkiner. Newbridge, Co. Kildare. September, 1914.', the compiler says that the book "has been prepared as a contribution to the local fund for providing comforts to our brave sailors and soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force'. Some of the recipes, such as "Patriotic pound cake', have names reflecting the book's purpose.
