FERGUSON, John   1837-1916

"Bibliographical notes on histories of inventions and books of secrets" was a series of papers comprising six parts and seven supplements read by John Ferguson to the Archaeological Society of Glasgow over the years 1882 to 1915. The parts and supplements were published as part of the Society's "Transactions' and also printed separately, each in a now scarce edition of 100 copies. Only the fourth to seventh supplements concern books of receipts in English. The seventh supplement, not described below, was read to the Society on 20 April 1911 but not printed at the University Press until 1915 (a copy is in LWel). The first collected edition of the parts and supplements was published in London by The Holland Press in 1959 in a two-volume set limited to 350 copies. @NUCat lists copies of the first to seventh supplements at NIC, ICJ, IU, DLC, MH, MB and NN, and "Supplements I-VI, 7 parts in one volume" at WU. @For other works by Ferguson see "A bibliography of John Ferguson' by Elizabeth Alexander, reprinted, with alterations, from the Transactions of the Glasgow Bibliographical Society, 1920. Of particular note to people in the culinary field may be "Books of secrets: a paper read before the Bibliographical Society, April 21, 1913", London: reprinted by Blades, East and Blades, from the Society's Transactions, 1914, pages 36. I have not seen this volume (copies are at WU, CU-I and N) but NUCat classifies it under the subject heading "Receipts # Early works to 1800 # Bibl" and Alexander describes it as "full of the research of long years, and... extraordinarily interesting to anyone who has followed in his papers the growth of his investigations and discoveries."
