FORWARD, Charles Walter   


A prominent member of the vegetarian movement, Forward wrote several books on vegetarianism and edited the "Vegetarian jubilee library'. He also authored a history entitled "Fifty years of food reform: a history of the vegetarian movement in England from its inception in 1847 down to the close of 1897 with incidental references to vegetarian work in America and Germany", London: The Ideal Publishing Union Ltd and Manchester: The Vegetarian Society, 1898.

      There are long quotations from Herbert Spencer, Dr T. Lauder Brunton and Galen on the title-page. In the preface Forward says that "Popular vegetarian cookery' was issued to meet the demand for a cookery book cheaper than his "Practical vegetarian recipes'. An advertisement for the book in "The vegetarian', New Series, Volume II, No. 5, May 1905 cites 7d post free as the price. The text contains 124 numbered recipes most of which are grouped together by their staple ingredient (wheat, oatmeal, maize, rice, haricot beans, lentils and peas).

      According to a footnote on page 95 of "Fifty years of food reform", this first edition was sold out on the first day of publication. In the preface Forward acknowledges assistance he received from the proprietors and chefs of five vegetarian restaurants (The Charing Cross Vegetarian Hotel, the Acorn, the Central, the Porridge Bowl, and the Apple Tree). The recipes are organised under the headings "Breakfasts', "Luncheons", "Teas' and "Dinners'.
      The LB copy is bound in grey paper. The nineteenth edition of Mary L. Allen's "Savouries and sweets' advertises the book bound in fancy boards, cloth back, gilt for 1s 6d.
