      The printing history on the verso of the title-page of the 1949 edition records the first edition as published in 1899; however, in the preface which follows the author says the first edition was published in 1898.

      According to the preface, Fowler first placed his appliances on the market in 1898. This "quarter century edition' was probably published in 1923, twenty-five years after that date. The latest testimonial, on page 122, is dated 1923.
