STEEL, Flora Annie   1847-1929

Flora Annie Steel was a novelist and an advocate of education for Indian women. She lived in India from 1868 to 1889 and became the first woman government inspector of girls' schools in 1884. Her best-known novel, "On the face of the waters', concerns the Indian Mutiny. She is the subject of a biography by Violet Powell published in 1981.

      General comments: The first edition was published in Bombay in 1888. A complete list of the editions is given in the twelfth edition of 1921, from which it appears that other editions not listed above were published in 1904, 1909, 1913 and 1917. There was also a reprint in 1907. The eighth edition of 1909 included a preface by Mrs Steel revising her estimates of wages and prices, and there was another similar preface to the tenth edition of 1913.
