      Though intended for a lay audience - primarily mothers - this is quite a technical work, and the author has made few concessions in his use of language. Part I, on the management of infancy and children in health, takes up less than a third of the book. The remainder of the book is on diseases, with an appendix of recipes and medical formulae including "The composition of various patent medicines commonly in use'.
