This is a readable guide evidently influenced by Florence Nightingale's "Notes on nursing', 1860. The first chapter, "having special reference to adults', covers ventilation, light, temperature, furnishing of the sick-room, food, cleanliness, tranquillity, gossip, influence of mind on body, observation and convalescence. The next "having special reference to children', deals with incautious use of medicine, signs of disease in children, and miscellaneous topics. There are also chapters on baths, applications, diet, sick-room cookery, domestic medicines, accidents, and management of the health in old age. It is quite unusual to find a section dealing with care of the aged.
