The "school' of the title was a centre provided for expectant and nursing mothers in the St. Pancras area of London. Its main aims were to provide women with an adequate diet throughout pregnancy and to encourage breastfeeding. Dinners were provided cheaply or free "on the condition that the said mother should nurse her infant'.
The book is an account of the "School', with photographic illustrations showing events such as the "weighing afternoon'. There are chapters on the evolution of the scheme and on ways of improving maternal and child health, including "lessons for mothers'.
