The book is addressed to young married women going out to India to live. There are a number of tables showing Indian weights, table expenses in the Punjab, servants' wages in the Punjab and North-West India, house rent, an Indian ready reckoner, and a calendar for growing a vegetable and flower garden in the plains of Punjab. There are also a few recipes although the author recommends the reader to turn to Wyvern's "Culinary Jottings' and Beeton's "Household management'. She also quotes Dr. Chavasse on childcare and interweaves her more general, moral advice with passages from the "sages' Thomas Carlyle and Richard Steele.
