The book takes the form of ten letters addressed to the author's granddaughter, with the addition of a preface, appendices and a cautionary tale entitled "Henry and Clara. A tale for young married people'. Unusually the printer's colophon gives the name of a woman printer, Anne Maurice of Fenchurch-street, London.
