      1. For a life of Dr Thomas Garnett see DNB. vol. 7 (1908), pp. 886-7. His best-known work is the excellent Observations on a Tour through the Highlands and Part of the Western Isles of Scotland (London, 1800). The work listed here is a lecture against the dangers of drinking and over-eating; and, wrote the author, it 'has been honoured with the attention of numerous audiences, in some of the most populous towns in England, where it has generally been read for the benefit of charitable institution'.
