DANIEL, Mrs Florence   died September 1927


I have taken Mrs Florence Daniel's date of death from page 16 of a small undated booklet in ChAVe entitled "A tribute to the memory of Charles William Daniel'. Her maiden name of Worland is recorded on page 4. Charles William Daniel, who lived from 1871 to 1955, was Florence's husband and publisher.% 0690

      In the preface the author acknowledges her grandmother, "Culpepper's herbal' and Dr Fernie's "Meals medicinal'. The book is in three parts: Part I, pages 1-14, is an introducti; ; Part II, pages 15-78, entitled "Foods and their medicinal uses', comprises alphabetically arranged entries for foods from almond to wheat, each entry giving the uses of the food and directions for its preparation; Part III, pages 79-87, contains three indices, one listing diseases with appropriate food and page reference, another listing prescriptions and recipes, and a general index.

      "Twentieth thousand' is printed on the binding. Printed on the verso of the half-title is "First edition: September, 1908 < Second edition: May, 1915 < Third edition: May, 1916 < Fourth edition: August, 1917 < Fifth edition: March, 1925'. This edition includes the preface to the third edition in which the author says that the "book was originally published for that "straiter" sect of food-reformers who abstain from the use of salt, yeast, etc. But owing to repeated requests from ordinary vegetarians,... I am now including recipes for yeast bread, cheese dishes, nutmeat dishes, etc.... To go to the opposite extreme there is a short chapter for "unfired feeders^`'.% 0698
