EARLE, Mrs Maria Theresa   1836-1925

NUCat records Villiers as the author's maiden name. Mrs Earle's autobiography, "Memoirs and memories', London: Smith, Elder and Co, 1911, contains her portrait. @Recipes and comments on cookery appear in other books by Mrs Earle not catalogued here. "Letters to young and old', London: Smith, Elder and Co, 1906, has chapters entitled "Health and food' and "Cooking receipts`. "A third pot-pourri', London: Smith, Elder and Co, 1903, is written in a similar style to "More pot-pourri' which it followed; however, cookery is not discussed regularly each month and the index lists recipes on pages 125-132, 151 and 284-297 only. The first five chapters cover dietary matters from a food reformist's point of view. "Helpful hints to health and happiness', London: Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent and Co Ltd; Glasgow: Pickering and Inglis; Dublin: Eason and Sons Ltd, nd [1913], contains selected extracts and recipes from "Pot-pourri from a Surrey garden`, "More pot-pourri from a Surrey garden`, "A third pot-pourri' and "Letters to young and old'.

The text follows the pattern set by "Pot-pourri from a Surrey garden'. Written like a diary, there are twelve chapters covering the period September 1898 to August 1899 each touching upon both gardening and cooking. Most of the first chapter discusses the response to "Pot-pourri from a Surrey garden'. One of the author's most complimentary letters was from an old friend, Mrs Roundell, asking permission to quote some of her recipes in "Mrs Roundell's practical cookery book', London: Bickers and Son, 1898.
I have taken the entry in NUCat for the copies at CSmH and CtY to refer to this first edition since no indication is given of the impression.

Mrs Earle begins by saying that she is not going to write a gardening book, a cookery book, or a book on furnishing or education but that she wishes to talk on several subjects as they occur to her through the year. The main body of the text is divided into chapters for each month from January to December, and in each chapter there are comments on cooking.

This unnumbered and undated edition has a frontispiece showing a garden scene but no illustrations in the text. Unlike the LB copy, the OB volume retains its original blue-cloth binding and its dust-jacket. On the dust-jacket this edition is listed as one of the additions to the "Nelson shilling library` during the second half of 1910. It is No. 43 in the series and cost 1s. LB, LoEN and OB all date the book [1910].% 0952

      18.0 x 11.5 cm   Pp [3-4] 5-366   Rebound
      GB:   *LB   LoEN

There are no illustrations in this unnumbered edition which LB and LoEN date [1919].
Dr Hunter reports that the LoEN copy has a half-title which reads, "Pot pourri from a Surrey garden` and that its pagination runs [1-4] 5-366. Hence the LB copy is likely missing a half-title.% General comments: NUCat records an undated edition published in London by T. Nelson and Sons and held by CSt but it does not specify whether it is the [1910] or [1919] edition.% American editions: NUCat lists a tenth edition, New York: E. P. Dutton and Co, 1898.% 0953 ======================================================================= = Via: UK.AC.RL.EARN; Wed, 19 Aug 87 04:27:47 BST Received: from UKACRL by UK.AC.RL.IB (Mailer X1.24) with BSMTP id 6231; Wed, 19 Aug 87 04:27:43 BS Received: from YORKVM2(MAILER) by UKACRL (Mailer X1.24) id 6227; Wed, 19 Aug 87 03:29:42 BS Received: by YORKVM2 (Mailer X1.23) id 6241; Tue, 18 Aug 87 08:28:09 EDT Date: Tue, 18 Aug 87 08:27:38 EDT From: Ian Taylor <YCSIAN
