      In the preface Mrs Wicken advises Australians to introduce fish, vegetables and fruit into their menus more often. The first chapter, "Fruit recipes", embraces a wide variety of local fruit such as melons, guavas, figs, passion fruit, loquats, pineapple, peaches, gramma, granadilla, mangoes and Cape gooseberries. Only a few of the book's recipes use meat.

      The preface is dated Kingswood, 20 January 1885.
      Ferguson 18517a records a small supplement to the book issued separately in Australia: "Supplement to Kingswood cookery book: recipes given by Mrs Wicken at the cookery class, Hobart, January 1890", Hobart: "Mercury" Office, pages 12.% Other editions: BMCat cites Melbourne and Sydney: G. Robertson and Co, 1888, pages viii, 264. This edition corresponds to Ferguson 18517. The copy is destroyed. LCF holds the fourth edition, eighth thousand, Sydney: Angus and Robertson, 1898. The LCF copy corresponds to Ferguson 18521.
