YOUNG, Mrs Hannah M.   24 June 1858-2 June 1949

The daughter of the author's sister-in-law informs me that Hannah Young was born in Birmingham on 24 June 1858. Mrs Young's father, Cornelius Young, made and sold gas cookers in Warrington, Lancashire, and she demonstrated the cookers for his company. Her husband was William Riding of Ormskirk, Lancashire. Since Hannah Young was well known professionally by her maiden name, he changed his name on marriage to Dr William Young. The author is buried in Harston, Cambridge. @Also by Mrs Young, but not a cookery book, is "Health without medicine: a treatise", Chester: Mrs H. M. Young; Manchester, London and Bristol: John Heywood, [1893].

Unlike the eighth edition described immediately below, no printer is cited on the title-page and no edition number is recorded on the binding.
In the preface Mrs Young says, ""Domestic cookery", my earliest work... appears in the present volume under a new guise. It contains, in addition to recipes from both "Choice" and former "Domestic" Cookery, much new matter." The 770 numbered recipes are followed by "Food in season", "Folding serviettes" and "Waste of gas in cooking". The publisher, Fletcher, Russell and Co Ltd, manufactured gas cooking ranges.

The edition number, eighteenth, is on the front face of the binding. Unlike the title-pages of earlier editions I have examined, here the accent for "Diplomee" is incorrectly positioned over the final "e". A blank paper label masks the printed price of 2s 6d on the title-page.
