      Bernarr Macfadden was born Bernard Adolphus McFadden in 1868 but later changed his name (see "Dumb-bells and carrot strips: the story of Bernarr Macfadden" by Mary Macfadden, London: Victor Gollancz Ltd, 1956). He was a life-long proponent of his theory of physical culture, a way of healthful living through diet and exercise. "Macfadden's new cookery book" is not vegetarian but rather advocates wholesome cookery with recipes that are low in seasoning and that often incorporate honey instead of sugar. Chapter I contains bills of fare used at the Physical Culture Health Home. LB dates the book [1903].% American editions: Bitting 397 cites the American edition.
