RIVERS, Miss Mabel Irwin   


EpicureDir 1899 cites Miss Mabel I. Rivers as a teacher of cookery with First-Class, Plain, Diploma, No. 1,258, October 1895, and First-Class, High-Class, Diploma, No. 1,310, July 1896, from the National Training School. She held the post of Teacher of Cookery at Portman Chapel Girl's School and her address is given as 10 Hervey Road, Blackheath. @The revised entry in EpicureDir 1909 records her full name, Miss Mabel Irwin Rivers, and adds further qualifications: Second Dressmaking and Advanced Physiology, and First Elementary Hygiene. Her position is now Staff Teacher at the National Training School of Cookery and her address, 39 Althorp Road, Wandsworth Common. @Miss Rivers edited "McDougall's cookery book" which went through several editions in the 1920s.

      The fourth edition contains a preface to the first edition which is dated 1906, probably incorrectly. I have found no earlier edition than that described here which bears the date 1907 on the title-page and which has an undated preface.
