KENNY-HERBERT, Colonel Arthur Robert   1840-1916


Kenney-Herbert sometimes wrote under the pseudonym "Wyvern'. He contributed the cookery section to "The hare', one of the "Fur and feather series' (see MacPherson, Rev. Hugh Alexander and others). The four editions of his "Sweet dishes' were published only in Madras by Higginbotham and Co in 1881, 1884, 1892 and 1900. @An advertisement for The Common Sense Cookery Association in the [1894] edition of "Fifty breakfasts' cites Kenney-Herbert as the association's Managing Director.

      Bitting 257 describes the [1894] edition with a frontispiece and seven plates; however, the copy in the Bitting Collection has neither frontispiece nor plates. The publisher's advertisements are dated October^1895 and the pagination runs [1-2] ads, [i-iv] v-viii, 1-520, [1] 2-29 [30] 31-32 publ ads.
      OPo(F) holds a copy with publisher's advertisements dated December 1895. The pagination matches the copy in the Bitting Collection.

      The preface to the fifth edition is signed "Wyvern. Ootacamund, 1st July 1885.'
      Although the text is mainly about cooking in the British or French manner, there are some more unusual chapters: XIII "Our curries', XXIX "Curries continued, and mulligatunny [--sic--], XXX "Camp cookery', and in the "Addenda' sections called "To preserve meat by fumigation' and "Our kitchens in India'.
      There was also a fifth edition published in Madras, Calcutta and Bombay (see "Indian editions', below).

In the introduction, which is dated London, 1 May 1892, the author comments, "The advice I give in this catalogue is more particularly addressed to Messrs J. Moir and Son's cliente1le in India and the Colonies; nevertheless there is much of it quite practicable in England, and to be earnestly recommended to home consumers of preserved food.' Pages 7-62 contain a catalogue of 119 numbered entries for Moir's products with Kenney-Herbert's suggestions for use. Pages 63-104 are recipes.
