Printed on the title-page is "Variety's the very spice of life, which gives it all its flavour. Cowper.' This quotation appears on the title-pages of all the editions that I have examined, that is the third, fourth and fifth editions. The book is dedicated "to the Countess Spencer, whose husband has for years been the principal supporter of the Pytchley country'. Menus in French and English on pages 6-101 are followed by 554 numbered recipes and a section on wines and their service.
