Printed on the title-page is the quotation ""Delirious persons here a cure may find, to stem the phrensy and to calm the mind."" (The quotation opens with double quotation-marks and closes with a single quotation-mark.) The quotation also appears on the title-pages of both the undated and dated second impression.
The introduction is signed by the editor "H. W. Lewer. 11th August, 1908.' He explains that the book is a transcription of a manuscript found in the library of a distinguished Essex antiquary. The manuscript was probably the still-room book of some manor house or homestead of standing. Written in the hand of several persons, it covered a period of some fifty years, terminating about the middle of the eighteenth century. The frontispiece is a reduced facsimile of a page of the original manuscript. The binding is also a reduced facsimile. There are 532 numbered recipes, an index, glossary and bibliography of herbals.
