The preface is dated London, October 1900. There are 1,030 numbered recipes, menus and other items, including instructions for "Australian soup', "Pawpaw preserve', "Roast wallaby' and "Prickly pear jelly'.
Testimonials on page i of the advertisements indicate that the first edition was published in Australia. A letter of 16 April 1898 from Lady Lamington, Government House, Brisbane, thanks the author for her copy of the book, and in a letter of 18 June 1900 the Earl of Kilmorey comments, "To many of my friends I have recommended her Australian book, and I am pleased to learn that Mrs Maclurcan is publishing an English version.' The Earl also states that Mrs Maclurcan was once the Proprietress of the Queen's Hotel in Townsville.
