The London, Cambridge and Glasgow publishers are printed on the verso of the half-title.
In the preface, which is dated 8 March 1900, the authors say that the 343 numbered recipes come from old manuscripts. There are some interesting and unusual recipes, particularly in the "Preserving, pickling and curing" chapter, for example "Ginger lettuce" and a "Recipe for English coffee" which uses horse beans.
A note at the end of the preface states that proceeds from the sale of the book will go to the Marchioness of Lansdowne's Officers' Families Fund, called Lady Lansdowne's War Fund on the binding.
