    Although the compiler identifies himself only by his initials in the preface, he signs his closing remarks on page 84 "A. Stewart."
    This is one of the few books written specifically for the people of Scotland with their traditions in mind. In the preface Stewart says, "The book has been prepared with the view of giving in the simplest form plain directions for making a number of the more common articles of diet peculiar to, or at least popular in Scotland.... Warne's and Beeton's penny cookery books have met with great success in England,... but to Scotch people they are practically useless". On page vi the Laird of Macnab, writing on the degeneracy of Scotch men and Scotch cookery, looks back to the old times before the influence of English cookery on the Scottish diet.
    LoEN dates the book [1878]; OB dates it [1879]. Following page 92 in the OB copy are pages 93-96 of publisher's advertisements.
    BMCat lists as destroyed an edition of 96 pages dated 1878 without brackets.
