Many books of the period claim to teach the art of cooking by gas but this is one of the few that provides practical hints about what kind of appliance to use with the various recipes. The front end-paper advertisements are for William Sugg and Co Ltd's gas stoves and other gas appliances. The author's informed approach to gas cooking must stem from her familiarity with the business.
The introduction is followed by a chapter on gas stoves and other gas cooking devices called "Roasters, kitchiners, etc". The author then presents a section of menus with recipes for the four seasons which she specifies as April, July, October and Christmas. Next, come the three subject divisions, "Home dinners", "Luncheons" and "Breakfasts", each of which includes a menu for the twelve months of the year. The final chapter is "Bread and cakes".
