    The preface is signed "C. Herman Senn. London, June, 1903." Senn says the translation of Suzanne's original work is by A. M. Garance. He also comments that the image on the binding illustrates the Spanish proverb, "To make a perfect salad four persons are needed. There should be a miser for the vinegar, a spendthrift for the oil, a wise man for the salt, and a mad-cap to stir up the ingredients and mix them well."
