The author says in an introductory note to the second edition that the recipes were "prepared originally for my mother, who was laid up for two years by her last illness, and my father (who was a medical man)'. She adds that the "booklet was first published for the benefit of a Church Bazaar, and afterwards the profits arising from its sale have been spent for the comfort of the poor.'
