In the preface on pages vii-ix, which is dated 18 January 1893, the author says that "the idea [for the book] was suggested by the need of such a book in the training-school of the Johns Hopkins Hospital.' The editor, Mrs C. E. Humphry, states in her preface to the English edition on page xi that she has altered the original as little as possible.
