    On the title-page is the quotation "And thus the cook, who day by day a proper menu writes, does fortify us for our play and for our daily fights. L. Sykes.' The preface is signed "Jessie Wharton Burrows. Green Hall, Atherton, August, 1909."
    The uncaptioned plates are an odd selection. Some illustrate set tables, one shows peasant women carrying baskets on their heads, while another is of cleaned fish lying on the ground.
