  • 1. [Tp lacking of an edition of "A hand-book of cookery for school and home"]

From appearances this edition is likely the earliest of the editions that I have seen. Unfortunately, the title-page of the collector's copy is lacking.
The preface of this edition is a short, single paragraph and is not signed nor initialled. It states that the book is "designed alike for use in schools, cottages, and middle-class homes." The section entitled "General hints to teachers of cookery" on pages 1-5 is dated July 1890. The first page of the first chapter, which is called "Hints on marketing and general notes about cooking" and which begins on page 9, is headed "A handbook of cookery". Every other leaf throughout the volume is blank, recto and verso.

The publisher's address on the title-page is 49 Old Bailey, EC, not 50 Old Bailey as in later editions. The preface is signed "A. T. P. Sheffield, 1892" and LB, LoEN and OB date the book [1892].

  • 3. — A | hand-book of cookery | for school and home | by | Ada T. Pearson | Diplomate (First Class) Northern United Schools of Cookery; Demonstrator in Cookery | to the Yorkshire Ladies' Council of Education; &c.

    US:   *NN

The preface is initialled "A. T. P." but is undated. Although the NN copy was acquired in 1915, I believe its publication was several years earlier.

The four-paragraph preface is signed "A. T. P." Beginning with the blank leaf following page vi, every other leaf throughout the volume is blank, recto and verso. A plate mounted on the front end-paper reads, "County Borough of West Ham Education Department. Prize".

  • 5. — [Another edition, [1906]]
    GB:   LB destroyed

BMCat lists "A handbook of cookery for school and home", London: Blackie and Son, [1906], pages 96. This must be a different edition than those described above because no hyphen appears in "handbook" in the title.

  • 6. — A | handbook of cookery | for school and home | by | Ada T. Pearson | Diplomate (First Class) Northern United Schools of Cookery; Demonstrator in | Cookery to the Yorkshire Ladies' Council of Education, &c.

Opposite the title-page are printed the addresses of Blackie and Son Ltd, Blackie and Son [India] Ltd and Blackie and Son [Canada] Ltd. A note on page iii warns the reader to add a percentage to the prices given in the text. LB dates this edition [1914].

  • 8. — [Title as 1913]
London, Glasgow and Bombay: Blackie and Son Ltd; nd
16.0 x 10.5 cm   Pp [i-vi] vii-viii, 1 [2-4], 9-96   Red cloth with girl tossing pancake on front and symbol of Leyton District Council on back
    GB:   *Priv coll

A note on page iv advises the reader to add a percentage to the prices cited in the text. Beginning with the blank leaf following page viii, every other leaf throughout the volume is blank. The copy examined has a presentation plate from Leyton District Council Education Committee dated 1925.% General comments: A hyphen in "hand-book" in the title characterises earlier editions. Of the earlier editions with the hyphenated spelling, I am uncertain where the copies at NN and OPo(F) fit chronologically; however, I have placed them in what seems the most likely order.
NUCat lists "A hand-book of cookery for school and home", London, Glasgow and Dublin: Blackie and Son Ltd, [1906], pages 96, at ICJ; and "A handbook of cookery for school and home", London: Blackie and Son Ltd, [1913], pages vi, 7-96, at NN. I have been unable to compare the ICJ copy with other editions. The NUCat entry for the NN copy probably refers to the edition at NN described above.
